Summer Latin Course

5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Join us this summer to learn classical Latin! This weekly class is great for beginners or for those seeking to brush up on their skills. In just three months, you’ll learn Latin vocabulary and see how much of the English language is derived from Latin, plus you’ll learn many fascinating aspects of daily Roman life and Roman mythology.

The study of classical Latin exercises memory, increases English vocabulary, and broadens general knowledge. Using the textbook Ecce Romani I (provided for free to each student), you’ll learn Latin vocabulary, English vocabulary derived from Latin root words, Latin & English grammar, & translation skills. Knowledge of Roman geography, history, daily life, & mythology will be enhanced through English or Latin readings and activities. The Latin meanings of certain common abbreviations and phrases used in English, such as e.g., A.D., et al., ad hoc, status quo, and tempus fugit, will be featured weekly. Depending on interest and available space, classes may continue September through May.

NOTE: Interested participants should be prepared to commit to attending all of the sessions.

SPACE IS VERY LIMITED. RSVP required. To RSVP, please click here or call the library at 203-488-1441 x 318.
