Drop-in DIY: Earbud bag or T-Shirt Tote

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Drop in anytime during this DIY event, and make your choice of an earbud drawstring bag or a simple tote. We will have fabric, ribbons, and t-shirts available to use, or you can bring in your own!

If bringing in your own, you’ll need:

Earbud bag: cotton fabric, at least 4″ x 11″ and two 15″ (or longer) ribbons.

T-shirt tote:  t-shirt, any size

Kids and Teens Summer Reading Begins

Summer Reading at the James Blackstone Memorial Library has officially begun with – Libraries Rock!

K thru 4th grade Program and Middle School and Up Program!

Children can follow either link to learn more about program specifics, this years prizes, and how we are shaking things up from your “traditional” reading log. As always, we will be at the Branford Festival, so if you are interesting in signing up face-to-face just look for us in the sea full of tents!

Make sure to check our calendar for exciting programs and realize that some events do require registration and have cut-offs, so the sooner you sign up the better.

Sheet Music Art: A Unique Project – 5th Grade and Up (Lucy Hammer Room)

Tuesday, June 19

3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

During this station based activity teens will transform pieces of sheet music into illustrated masterpieces by using a combination of paints, stencils and colored pencils. Participants will be challenged to use the notations on the page to create a scene or better yet tell a story – merging two pieces of artistry into one!

Digital Design: A Computer Science Club – 3rd thru 5th Graders (Lucy Hammer Room) Session Focuses on MUSIC

The James Blackstone Memorial Library is ready to build confidence, encourage exploration and demonstrate ways in which children can be “makers” in this digital based world by creating music, telling stories, making games as well as art projects through the online program SCRATCH.

Every week participants will work together to take on a different digital component that will introduce them to ways in which they can be makers! This summer we will be focusing on music, so participants will be making their own music videos, sound effects and more! SCRATCH is 100% free and accessible online so children can continue learning/making from home.

Interested in reading in a group setting, dying to discuss one of your favorite books or just tired of reading the same old thing? Then it is about time that you joined our monthly book club! Every month the Youth Services Department provides a different book from the intermediate Nutmeg Nominee list where participants can come together to discuss as a group and participate in various activities. This is a great way for book lovers to socialize, reinforce comprehension, make personal connections  and gives readers a chance to come in contact with different genres.

Robot Drum: Provided by the Eli Whitney Museum – 5th Grade and Up (Lucy Hammer Room)

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Work together to replicate Leonardo’s’ first robot, a music machine that can be programmed to produce rhythms and adjust tempos automatically. Once complete, try your hand at playing well known melodies or create your own cadences from scratch. Maybe we will even create our own song? Either way, the library will provide all the necessary materials and instructions to create your own drum.

Tuesdays

3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Hang out at the Blackstone after school on Thursdays in May.

Activities will vary each week, from tabletop games to maker activities. Plus, we’ll get your take on teen events, the upcoming renovation, and the library itself.

Grade 7 and up.
